If you’re reading this, you’re probably thinking about applying for an MMJ card for the first time. Or, perhaps your medical card is about to expire and you need a renewal (to renew, we outline below the requisite steps you’ll need to take to get a new valid medical marijuana ID card). Naturally, you don’t want to end up wasting half a day (or more) on an application or renewal process.
How many times have you asked yourself, ‘Where can I get a medical marijuana card?’
Depending on where you live, there’s likely a quick and easy solution. Most states place the brunt of responsibility on the doctors when it comes to a patient qualifying for medical cannabis. Furthermore, evaluation clinics exist in all states with active MMJ programs (some are even available online). Depending on where you live, you may qualify and get your card in as little as 20 minutes.
In this article, besides providing general application/renewal information for all states, we highlight specific states that offer online clinics. We’ll talk about how the consultations work, how much they cost, and what all you need to get your ID card quickly and easily.
The Online Medical Marijuana Card Process Explained
If you live in California, New York, or even Nevada and need an MMJ card, continue reading below – you’ll see that the process is very easy for you. If you reside in another state, you’ll still want to keep reading as much of the information is applicable to all MMJ programs.
Marijuana Card California
California, the so-called ‘weed capital of the world,’ adopts a lenient stance in terms of medical cannabis qualification. (This is thanks to the Prop 215 bill from way back in 1996). To put it simply, if you live in California and need to get a medical card quickly, you’re in luck. You can typically get a doctor’s medical marijuana card online, in minutes.
If the process doesn’t seem legit to you, we certainly don’t blame you. Feel free to learn more about the exact process and why CA specifically makes it so easy to get an online MMJ card.
Why is the process so easy in CA?
Most dispensaries in California accept medical marijuana recommendations, which makes life a whole lot easier for those that aren’t wanting to hassle with all the traditional ‘420 clinic’ baloney. When using an online medical marijuana card service, you’ll immediately get a recommendation. Your actual medical card will come a few days later (depending on the service you are using). Once you have the recommendation, you are basically getting a doctor’s consent to use medical weed as a treatment for your condition.
The process with MMJ card online services is pretty straight forward. The clinic will ask you to provide basic medical information, proof of residency, and proof of ID. Remember that no doctor’s service can issue a medical recommendation if you are not a resident of the state.
Once all your documents are in place, you’ll have the online evaluation with a doctor. This rarely takes longer than 15 minutes. The evaluation is standard, and your evaluating doctor will ask you questions regarding your medical condition. They’ll also ask why you think medical cannabis is a good form of treatment.
Once you’re finished, the doctor will go through all the legal necessities and issue you a recommendation. In most cases, you’ll receive the actual I.D. card at your doorstep in a couple of days. Thanks to Prop 215 in California, however, you can go out and purchase cannabis the same day you receive your email recommendation.
DID YOU KNOW: In California, patients who receive a medical marijuana recommendation online can buy cannabis the same day?
How Prop 215 Helps Patients Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online
California has adopted a policy which is quite different to most states. In 1996, with the passing of Proposition 215 (otherwise known as “The Compassionate Use Act”), medical marijuana became legal in California. This law permitted patients to possess and cultivate their own medicine for personal use. The only legal requirement was that the patient had to have a doctor’s recommendation.
This law basically gave doctors the ability to issue recommendations based on a thorough ‘420 evaluation.’ Even though California did take a major step in the right direction by easing the restrictions on medical marijuana (specifically by establishing the California Medical Marijuana Program), it’s important to emphasize the fact that the program doesn’t supersede federal law, which still classes cannabis as a Schedule 1 drug.
The process is getting easier as time goes on…
Since 1996 (and with the evolution of the internet), obtaining a medical marijuana card has become easier. Most doctors and physicians have incorporated online services which allow you to get an online MMJ card. Other doctors who are not so “tech-savvy” are working with technological providers and online video chat services to provide you with this service. In other words, no longer do you have to think where to get a medical marijuana card – you can simply go online, have an online 420 evaluation, and get your marijuana card.
Now that you understand how it’s possible to get an MMJ card online, let’s review some of the top medical card providers and in which states they provide their services.

Medical Review by Dr. Roozbeh Badii
Medical marijuana has been recommended by many for physical and psychiatric conditions. Some of the physical conditions are neurologic, and some are for peripheral pain associated with non-neurological diseases. In some cases, medical marijuana may be used in place of opiates and benzodiazepines and other psychiatric medications which have far more side effects than THC/CBD components. In addition, recent debates and research on cannabis have facilitated the use of cannabis to curb the current opiate epidemic in the United States. With that said, it is always best to consult with your physician before any use.
As for the psychiatric component of medical marijuana treatment, almost all states will approve the use of medical marijuana for diagnosed PTSD associated with anxiety and insomnia. There are several states in which you can get your medical marijuana card solely by a telemedicine consultation. Those states are California, New York, Nevada, Oklahoma, and soon to be Maine. In California, the recommendations for MMJ are much more liberal, and there are dozens of symptoms and conditions that can be used to recommend medical marijuana.
How many qualifying conditions are there per state?
In New York, there are 13 conditions, while in Oklahoma, there are 14. Only eight exist in the state of Nevada, and it remains to be seen in Maine. Throughout the rest of the states, the initial medical consult between the doctor and patient has to be done in-person and followups can be done via Telemedicine. Most other states carry the same criteria for qualifications as the state of New York. It is highly recommended that potential patients do their due diligence as to the qualifying criteria in the state where they live, especially as medical marijuana is not permitted in all states.
There are several telemedicine services that allow for consultations in particular states. Heally, Veriheal, and NuggMD are such services. Some of the services will give your card within an hour, and other’s may take up to 24 hours. Some of these services are associated with suppliers and will refer the patient to the dispensary or producer near where they live.
